Mauricio Robalino is a visual artist and teaching artist, who was born in Ecuador, and moved to the United States in 1971. He studied and practiced art in California until 1988 when he came to Washington. He has been a neighbor of El Centro Latino since June 2001. He has been an active member of this community organization since 2016 when he started showing his paintings there. In 2018 he had a one-person exhibition there. He showed his drawings and paintings that he created based on his Yoga practice. The creation of the drawings and paintings was in part funded by a Tacoma Artist Initiative Project grant.

Mauricio’s mosaics and sculptures can be enjoyed all over Washington, Portland, Anchorage and Los Angeles. Mauricio is a natural teacher who has enjoyed his contagious creative enthusiasm since he was a child. He has been teaching art formally since he was a teaching assistant at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1986, while earning his M.F.A. He has taught throughout Washington, Alaska and Oregon. In 2012 Mauricio enrolled and completed ARTSWA Teaching Artist Lab Training to hone his skills. In 2013 he became an artist in residence for the Tacoma Environmental Services’ ArtsEnviroChallenger program. For three years he visited countless classrooms in Tacoma’s elementary schools sharing his passion for visual arts and weaving in science and environmental stewardship. Mauricio would like to bring these gifts to bear fruit at El Centro Latino where he became a Board of Directors Member in 2019. His love for arts and culture led to his being named El Centro Latino Artist in Residence.

As artist in residence, Mauricio wants to enhance El Centro Latino’s already potent cultural contribution to our community. With funds from Tacoma Creates Mauricio wants to offer workshops and events to the people of Tacoma. These workshops can be presented at El Centro Latino, and at other venues. These workshops and events will include mural painting, mosaic making, drawing, painting, collage recycled art creations plus music, dance, drama, and language. Mauricio will help organize these workshops and events. He will work with other creative members of our community to help them provide unique and outstanding educational opportunities that are fun and life enriching.

Mauricio believes that creative play/art helps people form strong community connections, that enrich everyone. Below you will find examples of Mauricio’s teaching and public art.
