Position Summary

This position bears primary responsibility for the teaching of multi-level ESL classes to Latino individuals in the Tacoma area. The ESL Instructor is responsible for curriculum development, lesson planning, instruction, assessment, record-keeping and reporting. Utilization and supervision of classroom volunteers is a required element of the position.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Punctual and maintains strong level of professionalism.
  • Develops and implements curriculum for multi-level ESL classes.
  1. Performs placement testing and other assessments.
  2. Oversees registration and maintains attendance records.
  3. Maintains data collection procedures as required by funding sources.
  4. Submits monthly and quarterly reports.
  5. Maintains student files and procedures for the protection of client confidentiality.
  6. Maintains working relationships with host agencies.
  7. Other duties as assigned in support of the ESL program.

 

Working Conditions

 

  1. Work is performed primarily while sitting and standing.
  2. Work is performed primarily in agency office and off-site classroom settings.
  3. Driving between program locations and to associated meetings is a regular requirement of the position.

 

Qualifications

 

  1. Bachelors of Arts degree.
  2. TESL certification.
  3. Experience teaching or tutoring adult ESL students.
  4. Experience with curriculum development, lesson planning, testing.
  5. Experience in working with and supervising volunteers.
  6. Understanding of academic, cultural, and legal challenges faced by Latinos in Pierce County.
  7. Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish), both oral and written preferred.

8. Must work as an integral part of a larger team to promote the goals of the program and the mission of the agency.

9. Must be able to travel to local assigned areas, meetings, and events as needed.

10. Must have reliable transportation, a valid Washington State driver’s license and auto insurance as required by law.
